Commissioning & Water Treatment
The graded path of development: Distance Learning Courses A to C, the Grade 4 examination and the Grade 5 thesis.
The CSA runs three distinct training routes. One graded path for engineers, and two management courses for the people who plan and oversee the work.
The graded path of development: Distance Learning Courses A to C, the Grade 4 examination and the Grade 5 thesis.
Core Concepts is the foundation of professional Commissioning Management and a mandatory requirement for CSA Commissioning Manager grading. Aligned with CIBSE Code M and delivered by experienced Commissioning Managers with over 30 years of industry expertise.
Six CPD-certified hours for project managers, designers and clients — everyone whose work depends on commissioning going well.
The CSA provides a structured Path of Development for commissioning engineers, commissioning managers, and water treatment specialists.
This pathway combines technical training, formal assessment, and practical experience.
The CSA’s Distance Learning Courses (DLCs) form the foundation of technical training for engineers progressing through Grades 1 to 3.
Developed specifically for commissioning and water treatment professionals, the DLC programme provides structured training in the core theory, principles and practical knowledge required to operate competently within the industry.
Each course is delivered in a modular format (DLC A, DLC B and DLC C), allowing individuals to progress in line with their experience, competency development and career progression. All DLCs are completed and managed through CSA Connect, providing delegates with access to learning materials, assessments and progress tracking in a single platform.
Successful completion of each DLC includes an End of Assessment Exam, which is now arranged through CSA Connect. Candidates must successfully pass the examination before they can progress to the next membership grade.
Key features of the DLC programme include:
Upon enrolment, candidates receive a structured programme of modules and assignments, with progress managed through regular submission and feedback cycles. This creates a consistent and supported learning environment, ensuring knowledge is developed and demonstrated at each stage.
Successful completion of each DLC forms a key requirement for progression through Grades 1 to 3, supporting both professional development and CSA membership advancement.
Grades T to 3 are reached through the Distance Learning Courses. Grades 4 and 5 are not courses: an invigilated examination and a technical thesis, both assessed against the discipline you work in. The detail sits with the engineers it applies to.
The G4 examination and G5 thesis as they apply to commissioning — what each assesses, how it is delivered, and what it takes to pass.
The same two stages set out for water treatment, from core principles through to the specialist thesis topic.
Together, the DLCs, G4 Examination, and G5 Thesis form a structured and progressive pathway, ensuring CSA members develop the knowledge, experience, and professional competence required throughout their careers.
